Is DEXA more accurate than InBody and Evolt?

Yes. DEXA is the gold-standard reference method for body composition and is used in peer-reviewed research to validate BIA devices like InBody and Evolt. In a same-day, same-body comparison by Precision Body Lab, InBody and Evolt over-read body fat by 3.1 to 3.2 percentage points compared with DEXA (23.8% and 23.9% vs 20.7%).

Why is BIA less accurate on lean people?

BIA assumes a standard water distribution in lean tissue and fat. The leaner an individual is, the further they drift from that assumption, so the regression equations break down. Precision Body Lab has seen real cases of BIA reading 7% body fat on people whose DEXA scan showed 16.7% body fat. The error is almost always larger in lean, muscular individuals.

Why do InBody and Evolt give different numbers to DEXA?

BIA devices do not measure fat or muscle directly. They send a low electrical current through the body and estimate composition from the resistance detected. That resistance changes with hydration, food, exercise and sleep, so the estimate shifts even when body composition has not. DEXA directly images fat, lean tissue and bone using dual-energy X-rays.

Can InBody or Evolt measure bone density?
