DEXA Scan FAQs

Here is a list of common questions our clients ask before booking a DEXA scan, as well as information on what you need to do and know before, during and after your DEXA scan. If you still have questions, feel free to contact us at hello@precisionbodylab.com.au

Before Your Scan

Q: What should I wear when I get my scan? A: Wear light, comfortable clothing without any metal (e.g., no zippers, buttons, or underwire bras). Gym gear is perfect. If you have metal implants or other metal devices that can't be removed, don't worry, we will still be able to conduct the scan.

Q: Do I need to fast before the scan? A: Fasting isn't a requirement, but for the most consistent results, avoid drinking and eating, as well as strenuous exercise for 2–3 hours before your scan.

Q: Should I avoid exercise before the scan? A: Ideally, yes. Avoid any workouts the morning of your scan as it can temporarily shift your fluid balance and affect results slightly.

Q: Can I drink water before the scan? A: Yes, just avoid drinking large amounts (more than 250–300ml) 30 minutes before your scan. Try to use the bathroom (to pee) before your scan for accuracy.

During Your Scan

Q: What actually happens during the scan? A: You’ll lie flat on your back on a scanning bed for 6–10 minutes while the scanner moves over your body. It’s completely painless and non-invasive.

Q: Is there any radiation involved? A: Yes, but very minimal. The machine we use emits a dose that is 85x lower than other DEXA machines and is much lower than a standard X-ray — you get more radiation from standing outside in the sun than with our machine.

Q: Can I bring someone with me? A: Yes, but they may need to wait in the reception area during the scan unless they’re a carer or support person.

After Your Scan

Q: Will I get my results immediately? A: Yes! We’ll walk you through your scan results on the spot and you’ll receive a digital report via email.

Q: How often should I get a scan? A: This depends on your goals. If consistent tracking is essential for performance tracking, every 4 weeks is ideal. Although, 8–12 weeks is usually sufficient to track changes. Again, this is all dependant on your goals. We’ll help you decide what makes sense for you.

Q: Can I resume normal activity after the scan? A: Absolutely — there are no restrictions after your scan.

Medical and Technical

Q: Is it safe if I have metal implants or plates? A: Yes. The scan will still work, but those areas may show slight distortion in the image. Just let us know before the scan.

Q: Is this suitable if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding? A: If there is a possibility that you are pregnant, please let us know as we do not scan anyone who is currently pregnant. We are able to provide a scan if you are breastfeeding as it will not have any adverse effects.

Q: Will this scan detect medical conditions? A: No. While DEXA gives precise body composition and bone data, it’s not a diagnostic scan. Always consult your GP for medical concerns.

Booking and Payments

Q: How do I book a DEXA scan? A: Simply click “Book Now” on our website and choose the scan type and time that suits you best.

Q: Do I need a referral? A: No referral is needed for body composition scans in NSW.

Q: How much does a DEXA scan cost? A: Our initial DEXA scan is $129 and follow-up scans are $99. Full pricing is on our Bookings page.

Q: Can I claim this on Medicare or my health fund? A: Body composition scans are not covered by Medicare and in most cases they are not covered by private health insurance either.
